Argentina, Christmas 2010
During the twelve days of Christmas in 2010 (from December 26 through January 6), my wife and I traveled throughout Argentina. We started out at a comfortable inn in the Valle du Uco region south of Mendoza where we explored Argentina's famous wine growing region. From there we headed north to Uspallata. Next we detoured west toward Santiago, Chile on the highway which followed the route of the old trans-Andean railroad (which carried passengers through the mountains up until about 30 years ago). Prior to reaching the border, we turned back to Mendoza. After a day in Mendoza, we flew to Ushuaia (by way of Buenos Aires). After spending a few days in Tierra del Fuego, we flew back to Buenos Aires for a couple of restful days in the Puerto Madero before heading home.

Our favorite restaurant in Buenos Aires, the Morena Beach, located on the water next to a marina, is only a 15 or 20 minute walk from Aeroparque Jorge Newbery. We stopped in for lunch on New Year's Eve day during a four hour layover between planes while en route from Mendoza to Ushuaia.
Following are pictures of the rail yards and central rail station in Buenos Aires. Note the (disused) double gauge track in the yards. Note also the new light rail station terminus directly adjacent to the old freight line.
We were staying at the Hilton Hotel in the Puerto Madero neighborhood. These pictures come from the area around the hotel as well as from the hotel roof.
We ran across this organized demonstration while walking through Buenos Aires one day.
