Kalka to Shimla Toy Train
In January 2006, we travelled from New Delhi to Shimla by rail. From New Delhi, the train to Chandigarh continues on as far as Kalka on the broad gauge track relying on an electric catenary for power. Most of the passengers get off at Chandigarh and there is only a single track from Chandigarh to Kalka. At Kalka, the broad gauge terminates and the two foot six inch narrow gauge commences. While freight service appears to have been abandoned, this narrow gauge railway provides several trains a day between Kalka (which sits on the border of the Punjab and Himachal Pradesh) and the hill station of Shimla. The pictures above depict our journey from Kalka up to Shimla on the Himalayan Queen. For more pictures from this trip to India, please go to Travels in India in January 2006.
