In light of the unfolding financial crisis enveloping our nation,
it worth remembering that the Republican party is
still trying to privatize Social Security.
On March 22, 2007, the U.S. Senate rejected, 45-52, an amendment containing
language that would have established private accounts in Social Security. The amendment,
proposed by Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), would have
allowed the Senate Budget Committee to move money out of the Social Security
Trust Fund once the Senate Finance Committee approved voluntary individual
accounts. It was virtually identical to a similar amendment DeMint proposed
that was defeated, 46-53, on March 16, 2006.
